The Dartmoor weekend

A Weekend in an ancient Dartmoor longhouse and barns celebrating the season of abundance and really good light.

Ever since I set up Beltane at Prussia Cove, I have been thinking about another weekend, one closer to home, on the moor, and to celebrate a very different time of year - the end of summer. It is a time of such beauty and abundance, rich in colour, produce and light. I searched and searched for the perfect place to hold the weekend and last August I found it. A wonderful collection of ancient granite buildings close to the moor and hidden down one of Dartmoor's beautiful and tiny lanes.

This weekend will be based on the same model as our spring weekend in Cornwall but here we will be surrounded by the wildness of Dartmoor. Its granite tors, wide open spaces, brooks and rivers. Its weather beaten trees of rowan, hawthorn and gorse. Its tiny wildflower filled lanes and secret sheltered mossy banks.

We will have a barn full of the most beautiful flowers, foliage and fruit that September offers - all locally sourced. I will guide and encourage guests to make seasonal arrangements using a variety of vessels - tiny delicate pots, flat lays, bowls from a local potter, and abundant urns.

Installation building will be with the wonderfully creative Bex Partridge under which we will have our Sunday feast, and in the house a whole room full of artists’ materials for guests to freely use with the guidance of Jacky Mills.

We are thrilled for the first time for this weekend to welcome the wonderful Eva Nemeth to guide our guests in their photographic endeavours. Eva will be on hand all weekend to photograph Dartmoor and our art, and help you get the very best from your camera.

This weekend is about feeling your environment and season and then using that feeling and inspiration to create. No rules! All you need to bring with you is a love of the natural world and a desire to play. I hope that this will teach those already in the creative industries something about themselves they didn’t already know and those who are at the beginning of their creative journey a little more confidence to continue. All are welcome!

The barns and cottage

The weekend will start on Friday evening with a light supper, introductions and a good look around all the spaces. Saturday and Sunday will be spent in creativity with guests choosing to fill their time however they would like and a few activities designed to get everyone started. There will be opportunities to walk, a little foraging and many secret places all around the property to sit and draw or find that perfect place to photograph an arrangement or bouquet. The weekend is entirely catered and all meals will be delicious seasonal and where possible local food. We will finish late on Sunday afternoon with a feast under the collaboratively built installation. Guests will then be welcome to stay until 10am on Monday morning.

The weekend is limited to 10 places. We have 6 bedrooms some twin which you may like to book with a friend or family member.
